New Stop Signs to be Installed on Main Street in Downtown Los Altos

staff site visit

New multi-way stop signs will be installed at two intersections in Downtown Los Altos to improve safety for all users. The new stop signs will be installed at the intersections of Main and Second Street and Main and Third Street. Multi-way stop control improves safety by facilitating interaction between vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians. The new stop signs will be installed by the City’s maintenance division by Friday, August 3, 2018.

Background

The City recently conducted a multi-way stop sign installation study at various intersections in downtown Los Altos. The engineering study included analysis of traffic data, accident history and other criteria necessary to evaluate the implementation of multi-way stop control in accordance with the City of Los Altos Stop Sign Policy and Federal and State guidelines.

The recent study included a comprehensive analysis of Downtown corridor traffic and how it may be impacted by the installation of stop signs at the selected intersections. The result of this analysis demonstrated no significant adverse traffic impact or delay.

Construction Impacts

Temporary “NO PARKING” signs will be posted at least 48-hours in advance if it is necessary to have adjacent parking stalls cleared of vehicles while work is performed. In the event weather conditions cause postponement, the work will be rescheduled when the weather allows the work to proceed and signs will be reposted. Staff will minimize traffic impacts as much as possible while the signs are installed. Two-way traffic flow will be maintained; however, slight delays should be expected while work is performed.
