Los Altos Expands Virtual Recreation During Shelter-In-Place

Los Altos, Calif. – May 6, 2020 – The City of Los Altos has determined for the safety of the community and City staff, the best course of action at this time is to cancel all in-person Recreation summer offerings and focus solely on offering virtual alternatives.

After thoroughly evaluating the current situation and available resources, in-person special events, classes, day camps, and the production of the Summer Activity Guide have been canceled through August 2020, until further notice. City staff will continue to devote their time to deliver engaging digital experiences through the recently launched Virtual Recreation Center.

"The decision to cancel our summer programs was not taken lightly," said Donna Legge, Director of Recreation and Community Services. "Recreation staff has worked exceptionally hard on compiling numerous virtual resources to engage the entire community, and we hope, with help from residents, to grow our Virtual Recreation Center to new heights."

Since the launch of the Virtual Recreation Center on April 17, 2020, the Recreation Department has added several new categories to its abundant list of digital classes, including fee-based classes, a dedicated Tiny Tot Tipster page, and 'Cooking with Bumblebee'.

City staff is continuously exploring additional opportunities for the remaining spring and summer seasons while assessing the community's projected needs. We urge residents to share suggestions for digital classes or events through the City’s online Virtual Recreation Center survey.
