Los Altos Community Center Receives All-Electric Award

Los Altos, Calif. — October 18, 2023 — The Los Altos Community Center received the All-Electric Excellence Award, sponsored by Silicon Valley Clean Energy, at the San Jose Business Journal’s annual Structure’s Awards. This award is in recognition of the City’s decision to build an all-electric building years in advance of current state building code that now requires a more sustainable focus.

In accepting the award, Los Altos Mayor Sally Meadows said, “I am excited to receive the All-Electric Excellence Award on behalf of the City: it is recognition of the hard work by our community, staff, and former Council Members who led the process that resulted in our new Community Center. Thanks to their vision, we will be enjoying events for decades to come in a building that is beautiful, multifunctional, and sustainable.”

The Los Altos Community Center opened its doors in October 2021 as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold equivalent building. The all-electric building utilizes rooftop solar to power its operations, including heat-pump heating, ventilation, and cooling system, as well as an all-electric commercial kitchen. Additional environmental aspects of the building include multiple windows (increasing natural lighting), fans in every room (limiting need for air-conditioning), and many water-wise devices throughout the campus.

The Community Center, which houses the City’s Parks & Recreation department, is located at 97 Hillview Avenue. The building is the site of numerous classes and camps, and is home to the City’s Adult 50+ and Teen programs, and Tiny Tots Preschool. Since its opening, the 24,500-square-foot building has become a popular meeting spot for community members to gather informally, as well as a place to hold celebrations and meetings throughout the year.
