City of Los Altos to Host Community Meetings to Gather Feedback on Possible Locations for Fenced-In Dog Park And/Or Off-leash Hours Program

Los Altos, Calif. – February 19, 2020 – The City of Los Altos Parks and Recreation Commission and City staff hosted the first of two public meetings to gain feedback on residents’ opinions about a fenced-in dog park and an off-leash pilot program in the City. The City got feedback from 173 people, with many more coming to hear the presentation or to look at the options. With a week and a half till the next meeting, we hope to double the number of responses we received. The City of Los Altos wants to thank the Commissions and the people that came out to voice their opinions!

Our next two workshops will be held on Saturday, February 29 from 10am to 12 pm at the Grant Park Multi-Purpose Room located at 1575 Holt Ave.  While residents are encouraged to stay as long as they want, the meetings format were designed to be a drop-in with an interactive component. An informational presentation will be scheduled at 10:15 am and 11:15 am to include a review of the history, criteria, dog park types and proposed locations.

The Parks and Recreation Commission is seeking feedback for one preferred location for a dedicated fenced-in dog park at either McKenzie Park or the southern portion of Lincoln Park. In addition, two locations are being proposed as an off-leash pilot program at the Hillview Baseball Field and Heritage Oaks Park. The off-leash hours program would offer set hours in the morning and evening, when not scheduled for other long-standing recreational programs. The pilot off-leash hours program does not involve the installation of additional fencing and will not be dedicated space, except during the specified hours.

The objective of the workshops is to provide background and information, fulfill City Council direction, engage and solicit input, and answer questions. This feedback will assist the Commission in formulating a recommendation that will be forwarded to the City Council at a future special meeting on March 18, 2020 at 7 pm at the Los Altos Youth Center. The workshops will encourage residents to indicate their choices, for the different options as well as provide other ideas and comments. Participants can select one option for a fenced-in dog park and one option for the off-leash pilot programs. These options are: “Yes” for either location, “Yes” to both locations, “Yes to Off-leash Hours, but not here,” “Yes to a Dedicated Fenced-in Dog Park, but not here,” “No to Off-leash Hours”, or “No to a Dedicated Fenced-in Park.” If a resident is unable to come to the workshop, then they can stop by City Hall or the Underground (400 University).
