Sidewalks

Description

The portion of a roadway section constructed for use by pedestrians.  Sidewalks are constructed of a durable, hard and smooth surface and are usually separated from the roadway with a curb.

Advantages 

  • Improve pedestrian safety by moving pedestrians off the roadway
  • Channel pedestrians to designated intersection crossings
  • Tie together two areas by improving access


Disadvantages

  • Relatively expensive to install
  • Maintenance


Evaluation Considerations

  • Sidewalks will change the character of the neighborhood street
  • Maintenance considerations from tree roots

Design/Installation Considerations

  • Can be constructed with Asphapt Concrete, Portland Cement Concrete, or bricks.
