Mounds

Description
Raised mounds constructed of colored, stamped asphalt concrete or Portland cement concrete.  They can be placed in advance and following a median island to discourage drivers from using the bicycle/pedestrian shoulder area to avoid the horizontal deflection of a chicane. Can also be used to reduce turning radii and speed, and as an alternative to a median island and a mid-block bulb out.

Issues Addressed

  • Bicycle and Pedestrian safety
  • Speeding

Applications

  • Local street, local collector and collector
  • Used as part of a chicane
  • Used to reduce turning radii

Advantages

  • Can be used in tight spaces.
  • Does not damage vehicles.

Disadvantages

Evaluation Considerations

  • Consider using a median island or bulb out if they do not block required access and there is sufficient space to install.
  • Ideal as a stand-alone device for corner treatments or in combination with other devices.

Design/Installation Considerations

  • 4” max height, 3’ min width.
  • Color should contrast with pavement color.
