Mounds

Description

Raised mounds constructed of colored, stamped asphalt concrete or Portland cement concrete. They can be placed in advance and following a median island to discourage drivers from using the bicycle/pedestrian shoulder area to avoid the horizontal deflection of a chicane. Can also be used to reduce turning radii and speed, and as an alternative to a median island and a mid-block bulb out.

Advantages

Can be used in tight spaces.
Does not damage vehicles.

Disadvantages

Not as effective as a median island or bulb out; drivers may chose to straddle or drive over them.
Not as visible as a median island or bulb out.
Makes future asphalt overlay projects more expensive.

Evaluation Considerations

Consider using a median island or bulb out if they do not block required access and there is sufficient space to install.
Ideal as a stand-alone device for corner treatments or in combination with other devices.
