Flashing Pedestrian Warning Lights

Description
These devices are yellow warning lights placed either on poles or mounted in the pavement at crosswalks to alert motorists of a pedestrian crossing. The flashing lights can be installed so that they are actuated by pedestrians at a crosswalk using a push button.

Issues Addressed

  • Pedestrian safety

Applications

  • Collector, arterial

Advantages

  • Pedestrian's actions are more visible and predictable for motorist.
  • More effective than painted crosswalks.

Disadvantages

  • Pedestrians may have a false sense of security; pedestrians may falsely assume motorists will see them and yield.
  • Relies on driver attention and compliance.  May not slow all drivers.
  • Relatively expensive to install.

Evaluation Considerations

  • Not as effective for crossings with pedestrian traffic volumes less than 100.

Design/Installation Considerations

  • Flashing lights' brightness must be able to adjust to amount of sun light (Ex. amber light more intense during the day, less intense at night).
