Class III Bikeway

Description
Provides for shared use with pedestrian or motor vehicle traffic and is identified only by signing.  Also called a bike route.

Issues Addressed

  • Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety

Applications

  • Local streets, local collectors, collectors, arterials

Advantages

  • Provides relatively inexpensive way to provide bicyclists and motorists with a sense of separation from each other

Disadvantages

  • Parking is permitted, forcing the bicyclists to move into the travel lane to get around a parked car.
  • Where traffic is heavy, tends to only serve the boldest of cyclists.

Evaluation Considerations

  • City staff evaluates the need for a bike route marking based on bicycle usage and impacts to the roadway.

Design/Installation Considerations

  • Requires a smooth surface that has been provided along the edge of a roadway, typically with a 4 inch solid white line separating the biking area from the roadway. On-street parking is allowed in the lane.
