Class II Bikeway

Description
Provides a striped bicycle lane for one-way travel on a street or highway. Also called a bike lane.

Issues Addressed

  • Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety

Applications

  • Local collectors, collectors, arterials

Advantages

  • Dedicated space on roadway for bicyclists
  • Adding bike lane may narrow the traffic lane, thereby calming traffic

Disadvantages

  • Can complicate bike and vehicle turning movements at intersections

Evaluation Considerations

  • City staff evaluates the need for a bike lane marking based on bicycle usage and impacts to the roadway.

Design/Installation Considerations

  • Requires a minimum 4 foot width on roadways with a 6 inch solid white line separating the bike lane from the motor vehicle lane. If on-street parking is allowed, the minimum width is five feet.
