Class I Bikeway

Description
Provides for bicycle travel on a paved right of way completely separated from any street or highway. Also called a bike path or multi-use trail.

Issues Addressed

  • Bicycle and Pedestrian safety

Applications

  • Local collectors, collectors, arterials

Advantages

  • Moves pedestrians and bicyclists off the roadway

Disadvantages

  • Cost: the cost to design and build is about $225 per linear foot (2007 prices)

Evaluation Considerations

  • Caution should be exercised on streets with closely spaced driveways, as these can present conflicts with vehicles entering and exiting.
  • Primarily used by city staff for Safe Routes to School routes and regional trails such as the Stevens Creek Trail.

Design/Installation Considerations

  • Requires an 8 foot pathway with a 5 foot buffer from the roadway and a 2 foot buffer from trees, poles, walls and fences on the non-roadway side.
