Los Altos, Calif. – May 18, 2015 – The City of Los Altos is excited to announce the launch of its profile on Nextdoor, the private social network for neighborhoods.

The City of Los Altos is committed to transparency and open government. As such, the City has been actively evaluating methods that might help to increase its engagement with the community. Nextdoor has been identified as a tool that will allow the City to reach residents where they’re already active online. Twenty-five Los Altos neighborhoods have started Nextdoor websites and over 5,500 residents are already subscribed.

“Today, we are excited to officially join the Nextdoor community,” says Marcia Somers, Los Altos City Manager. “Nextdoor will allow the City to provide residents with city-wide, as well as neighborhood-specific updates, connecting residents to information that is timely and relevant.”

The City will use Nextdoor to share information related to City projects, studies, events and activities. Nextdoor adds to the City’s social media presence, as it is already active on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Nixle.

Nextdoor is free for residents and the City. Each Los Altos neighborhood has its own private neighborhood website, accessible only to residents who verify that they live in the neighborhood. Neighborhoods establish and self-manage their own Nextdoor websites and the City will not be able to access residents’ websites, contact information or content. Information shared on Nextdoor is password protected and cannot be accessed by search engines.

Those interested in joining their neighborhood’s Nextdoor website can visit www.nextdoor.com and enter their address. If residents have questions about their Nextdoor website, please visit help.nextdoor.com.
